Great read! This country needs more honest conversations. We won’t win hearts and minds by telling people to shut up. Politics is downstream of culture, after all!
Wow. You managed to beautifully articulate something that has been nagging at me for a while, particularly in regards how we as progressives interact with those on the “other side.” I think about this a lot because while I’d honestly to prefer to not engage with some people at all, I think you hit it on the nose that this is an issue of hearts and minds. And progress is being undone at such a rapid pace, it’s made me contemplate if I actually do have a “duty” to educate others, if not just for the sake of my community. A lot of the popular political rhetoric we hear is so devoid of empathy and it’s to all of our detriment. This was so well-said and extremely timely and I can’t wait to read more of your thoughts.
Thanks so much, Andrianna! I agree that it's difficult to even want to talk to people on the other side. Especially as Black people, we are generationally scarred by racism and distrustful of people that don't immediately make us feel safe. That helps us to preserve our peace and protect our spaces, but can slowly turn into us not giving any space to those who actually want to be allies and learn. And even among people we already know and are in community with, it's easy to not have empathy. Thanks for tapping in

Great reflections on calling out vs. calling in and purity culture within the left. Excited to see more of your writing!
Thanks for reading, Natalia! Looking forward to digging into your materials, as well
